Family Law in Arvada
Arvada sits in two counties at once. Which courthouse hears your divorce depends on which side of the line your address falls, and the two are about twenty miles apart.
Arvada is a city of roughly 123,000 people that has been growing since Lewis Ralston found the first documented gold in Colorado here in 1850. Most of the city is in Jefferson County. A smaller northeastern portion, about 2,900 residents at the last census, is in Adams County.
For most city services that split is invisible. For a family law case it is the first thing that matters, because Colorado files cases by county, and Arvada's two counties are in two different judicial districts with two different courthouses. Even the city's own municipal court warns that a citation written inside Arvada may be handled by Jefferson County or Adams County depending on where in town it happened. The same fault line runs under your divorce.

Which side of Arvada are you on?
If your address is in the Jefferson County portion, your case is heard in the 1st Judicial District at the Jefferson County Courts, 100 Jefferson County Parkway in Golden. If your address is in the Adams County portion, it goes to the 17th Judicial District at the Adams County Justice Center, 1100 Judicial Center Drive in Brighton, roughly twenty miles further northeast. Different judges, different local practice, different drive.
There is a wrinkle worth knowing, and it can be an advantage. Colorado venue rules place a dissolution where either spouse resides. When separating spouses end up on opposite sides of the county line, or when one moves across it, the family may genuinely have a choice of forum. That choice is worth making deliberately rather than by accident, because local practice differs between the two districts.
The statewide requirements are identical either way: 91 days of Colorado domicile before filing under C.R.S. 14-10-106, a further 91 days after service before a decree can enter, venue under C.R.C.P. 98(c), and a court approved parenting class routinely ordered for parents of minor children under C.R.S. 14-10-123.7.
The guideline math at Arvada's median income
A nineteen year marriage sits at the long end of the guideline range, and the numbers move accordingly. The illustrative facts: a 19 year marriage, a 75/25 earning split of Arvada's median household income of $117,348, two children, and 209 overnights a year with the lower earning parent.
Both figures come from the engines behind our free maintenance and child support calculators. They are illustrations, not predictions (how these examples are computed). For the full walkthrough of the 2026 child support law, read our attorneys' worked examples.
A housing stock with a long history
Arvada's homes range from nineteenth century properties around Olde Town to postwar subdivisions to recent construction, and that range shows up in property division. Long-held family parcels raise separate property questions more often here than in newer suburbs: a home inherited or owned before the marriage generally stays separate, while the increase in its value during the marriage is usually marital. Those are two distinct calculations and both need doing.
Colorado divides marital property equitably under C.R.S. 14-10-113, which means fairly in light of all the circumstances rather than automatically fifty-fifty. For a couple whose main asset is a house held for decades, that analysis is most of the case.
Schools and the commute
Most Arvada students attend Jeffco Public Schools, which runs a choice enrollment process with a first round decided in January. Because the city crosses a county line, families near the northeastern edge should confirm their assigned district by address rather than assuming, and the parenting plan should name the school and the enrolling parent explicitly.
Arvada also has three stations on RTD's G Line, at Olde Town, Arvada Ridge, and Arvada Gold Strike, with a direct run to Denver Union Station. For exchanges that involve a parent commuting downtown, building the schedule around actual train times beats building it around optimistic drive times.
Questions we hear
Arvada family law FAQ
How do I know which county my Arvada address is in?
Your property records and county tax notices will say, and the assessor’s parcel lookup for each county confirms it. Most of Arvada is in Jefferson County; a smaller northeastern portion is in Adams. It is the first thing to establish, because it decides which courthouse takes your filing.
Can we choose which courthouse hears our case?
Sometimes. Colorado venue rules place the case where either spouse resides, so when spouses live on opposite sides of the line, or one moves across it, there can be a real choice. It should be a considered decision, since the two districts have different judges and different local practice.
What if one of us files in the wrong county?
Venue problems are usually fixable, but fixing them costs time and sometimes a transfer motion. Since the two courthouses are about twenty miles apart in different judicial districts, confirming the county before filing is the cheapest step in the case.
We live near the county line and cannot agree on where to file. What happens?
Whoever files first generally sets the venue, provided it is proper. That is one reason the county question is worth resolving with counsel early rather than treating it as a technicality to sort out later.
Does the county split affect child support or parenting standards?
No. Colorado’s support guidelines and best-interests standards are statewide and identical in both districts. What differs is the courthouse, the bench, and the local scheduling practice, which affect timeline and logistics more than outcome.
