Family Law in Centennial
Every Arapahoe County divorce, from Cherry Hills to Aurora’s county line, is heard inside Centennial. For the city’s own 108,000 residents, the courthouse is a neighbor.
Centennial incorporated on February 7, 2001, and with roughly 100,000 residents on day one it was the largest municipal incorporation in United States history at the time. A quarter century later it is a city of 108,000 that still runs lean: law enforcement comes from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office under an intergovernmental agreement, recreation is delivered by two special districts, and the city's signature corporate name is Arrow Electronics, the Fortune 500 distributor headquartered here.
For family law purposes Centennial holds one distinction no neighbor can claim: the Arapahoe County Justice Center on South Potomac Street sits inside the city limits. When Centennial residents divorce, they file in their own city, and so does everyone else in Arapahoe County.

Your courthouse is in your city
Domestic relations cases for all of Arapahoe County are heard at the Arapahoe County Justice Center, 7325 South Potomac Street, which the Census Bureau's own geocoder places inside Centennial. Since January 2025 the 18th Judicial District covers Arapahoe County alone.
The mechanics are statewide: one spouse domiciled in Colorado for 91 days before filing under C.R.S. 14-10-106, a second 91 day clock between service and the earliest possible decree, venue under C.R.C.P. 98(c), and courts here routinely order parents of minor children into an approved parenting class under C.R.S. 14-10-123.7. A practical note for exchanges and protection orders: policing inside Centennial is the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, not a city police department.
The guideline math at Centennial's median income
Every Colorado support case starts from the same statutory formulas; here is what they produce a few minutes from the courthouse that applies them. The illustrative facts: a 10 year marriage, a 75/25 earning split of Centennial's median household income of $131,928, two children, and 200 overnights a year with the lower earning parent.
Both figures come from the engines behind our free maintenance and child support calculators. They are illustrations, not predictions (how these examples are computed). For the full walkthrough of the 2026 child support law, read our attorneys' worked examples.
A broad middle, priced honestly
Centennial's estate profile is the metro's professional mainstream: established homes with real equity, two retirement systems, sometimes equity compensation from the Tech Center a few exits north or from employers like Arrow. The division rules are the same equitable framework in C.R.S. 14-10-113 that governs everywhere, and the work is in the pricing: the refinance a buyout actually requires at current rates, the tax character of each account, and the difference between what a house is worth and what it costs to keep.
The city's east side adds a specific line item. Recreation east of I-25 runs through the Trails Recreation District, west of I-25 through South Suburban Parks and Recreation, and district taxes and program access differ accordingly. Small, but real, and the kind of detail a two-household budget should get right.
One city, two school districts
Most of Centennial is zoned to the Cherry Creek School District, while the city's western portion belongs to Littleton Public Schools. Which district applies depends on the home's address, and after a separation that becomes a live issue: two new addresses a mile apart can sit in different districts with different calendars, start times, and enrollment rules.
When school continuity matters, the parenting plan should say so explicitly: which school, who holds the enrolling address, and how open enrollment or choice applications are handled if either parent moves. We draft those provisions to the districts' actual processes rather than leaving them to goodwill.
Questions we hear
Centennial family law FAQ
Is there anything I should file before talking to a lawyer?
No. Talk first. Filings start clocks and lock positions, and a consultation before anything is filed costs nothing in strategy. If you have already been served, bring the papers to the consultation; response deadlines are real and short.
Does living near the courthouse change anything about my case?
It changes logistics, not law. Hearings, status conferences, and filings all happen minutes away, which makes in person appearances and last minute document runs far less costly in time. The rules applied inside the building are statewide.
Our house is in Cherry Creek Schools but I may move west. What happens?
Western Centennial is zoned to Littleton Public Schools, so a move can change the assigned district. If keeping the current school matters, the parenting plan should fix the enrolling address and the fallback process before anyone signs a lease.
Who responds during a difficult exchange in Centennial?
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, which provides all law enforcement inside the city by agreement. For recurring friction we build exchange terms with defined public locations and, where needed, civil standby.
How is child support calculated for us?
On the statewide worksheet: both gross incomes, the overnight schedule, and adjustments like health insurance and child care. Since March 2026 parenting time is credited from the first overnight on a graduated curve, so the schedule and the number move together. Our calculator runs the current statute.
